Theatre-body: between Nancy and Derrida

Abstract
The paper examines the relationship between two polarities of the theatrical domain, namely the actor’s physical presence (body) and the space of representation (theatre), according to Nancy and Derrida. The author suggests that the very logic of the représentation and the related contradiction of the being-in-presence (typical not only of the actor, but also of the philosopher) may be usefully reassessed by considering the dyad theatre-body jointly rather than the two polarities severally. This is in fact exactly what Nancy and Derrida do, the former by alternating a conception of the body as doubling with a conception based on intensity, in the sense of the il y a of the actor’s body, while Derrida, by analysing his paradoxical experience as the actor-of-himself, seems to attain a sort of autonomy of the body, turning it into a techno-natural device capable of surprising the subject.

Abstract
L’articolo indaga, nel lavoro di Nancy and Derrida, la relazione fra due polarità del dominio teatrale: la presenza fisica dell’attore (corpo) e lo spazio rappresentativo (teatro). L’articolo suggerisce che prendendo in carico non le due polarità in se stesse, ma la diade corpo-teatro, sarebbe possibile ripensare tanto la logica della représentation quanto la correlata contraddizione dell’essere-in-presenza (tipiche non solo dell’attore, ma anche del filosofo). Nancy fa questo alternando a una concezione del corpo come raddoppio una concezione basata sull’intensità, nel senso dell’il y a del corpo dell’attore, mentre Derrida, analizzando la sua esperienza paradossale di attore-di-se stesso, sembra recuperare una sorta di autonomia del corpo, assunta come dispositivo tecno-naturale in grado di sorprendere il soggetto.
